Customer:
Manufacturer of automobiles in Southern Ontario for the North American market. Tool Type:
Automotive hemming dies. Tool Material: Cast iron. Production Material: 1008 draw quality.
History:
Die wear required toolmakers to weld and peen edges every 2 weeks. To maintain production
demand, repairs were made in the press and proved to be difficult and costly.
Trial
Results: Wear life of the lonitrided hemming die exceeded expectations and
eliminated down time for the production life of the car model. lonitriding proved such a
success the customer specified Exactatherm to lonitride a series of 17 new hemming dies on
tooling projects that followed.

Customer:
Gananoque Steel Forge Inc., a manufacturer of steel forgings, mostly engine parts for the
Automotive industry. Tool type: Press forging dies. Tool material: Die block steel with a
nickel / chrome weld overlay. Production material: C 114 1 (vanadium micro alloyed).
History:
G.S.F.I. forged 150,000 - 180,000 parts from a die set before the weld overlay needed
replacement to continue making quality parts.
Trial
Results: 350,000 parts on average are now forged from a die set when
Ionitrided Vs 300,000 parts when gas nitrided.lonitriding doubled die life before the weld
overlay needed to be replaced. Dimensional stability, surface hardness up to Rc70 with
core hardness maintained and vacuum clean results convinced G.S.F.I. to Ionitride their
forging dies and other tooling at Exactatherm.
